THE much-loved Waverley paddle steamer is returning to Southend Pier with a series of unique cruises - including a Swinging Sixties-themed expedition.

The world’s last seagoing paddle steamer is a huge hit with residents and tourists, taking passengers along the Thames Estuary and into London.

Building on the success of the trips, a series of special new themed cruises have been announced including a special celebration of the 60th anniversary of Radio Caroline, a Swinging Sixties Pirate Radio cruise and a trip around the Principality of Sealand.

Captain Dominic McCall said: “Waverley’s return to London and the Thames Estuary is always a special occasion, and this year is particularly significant.

The Waverley will be back in the town from September 27 to October 13. Among the new themed cruises for 2024 is a special trip on October 4 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Radio Caroline.

This cruise will take guests along the River Blackwater, providing a rare opportunity to sail around the MV Ross Revenge, home of the famous pirate radio station.

Guests will have the chance to meet Radio Caroline DJs, including Keith Skues and Mandy Morton, who will share stories from the golden age of pirate radio.

The Swinging Sixties Pirate Radio Cruise on October 6 will feature live 60s music from Adam Knight’s 60s Roadshow, performances by DJs from various pirate radio stations, and an up-close look at the historic Thames Forts.

The schedule continues with a special sailing on October 8, where passengers will cruise along the coast and around the Principality of Sealand.

Prince Michael of Sealand will be aboard to give live commentary about this extraordinary maritime structure, with pirate radio DJs from Radio Essex also on board.

The grand finale of the Waverley’s Southend sailings will take place on October 13 with a spectacular Historic Ships Parade, where the Waverley will meet and sail alongside other historic vessels, including the Steam Tug Challenge.
