ECHO reporter Michael Robinson took a trip to Rayleigh to test out Wilma’s Bakery following the exciting news the business would be expanding to Southend High Street.

Wilma’s Bakery is a staple of Rayleigh High Street and after being asked by my editor to try out the most popular item on the menu I couldn’t wait to give it a go.

The warm and vibrant colour scheme of the shop was the first thing to catch my eye as I made my way to the counter.

Following recommendations from friendly staff, which included a caramel Freddo cookie and banana bread, I identified and ordered an appetising challenge, the “milk choc cookie pie,” with tea to complement it.

I must admit I am no stranger to food, and couldn’t wait to take my first bite. The dessert turned out to be as delicious as it appeared.

The treat, which had been warmed to really show off all the chocolate inside, then suddenly disappeared.

Following the cookie’s vanishing act, a staff member remarked that I had no issue finishing that – they were spot on.

I would recommend the treat to anyone with a sweet tooth such as myself, but would definitely leave it at one.

I would have had no issue buying even more and falling into a food-induced coma.

After polishing off my tea, I made my way out of the busy shop and returned to my car, disappointed that the experience was over.

Wilma’s Bakery, run by husband and wife duo Gemma and William, also operates from Leigh Broadway, and is set to open a third site at the former Wenzel’s on Southend High Street.

The firm employs their workers from across Southend, Rayleigh, Westcliff and Leigh.

It is rated 4.5 out of five on Tripadvisor with customers praising it for an “amazing selection of drinks and cakes to choose from”, “excellent service”, “top notch presentation” and reasonable prices... and I can certainly see why.

It is well-known for its selection of freshly made cakes, brownies, cookies, as well as its coffee and I will be sure to make another visit to test out some of the other top items.
