A PREGNANT mum feared her home could have burnt down after the door to her kitchen got jammed while she was cooking.
Keely Deasy, 33, an office manager, said a family friend had no choice but to break down the door at her home in Becketts, Laindon, after it had slammed shut.
Ms Deasy, who had been frying chips at the time, claims the door jammed shut after being blocked by a drawer as she briefly left the kitchen.
Having just returned from her uncle’s funeral, said she had been cooking at 8.30pm before going to speak with her nine-year-old daughter when the door shut behind her, and despite her best efforts, it would not budge.
She explained the incident left her fearing for her home and neighbours, and said it was really lucky her brother and father only lived ten minutes away and were able to help her.
Ms Deasy added her brother’s friend, Kevin, had “kicked the kitchen door in” to get through, and this had unfortunately resulted in damage to the door frame and door.
She said: “I had come out of the kitchen to see my daughter and the door slammed and would not open. I had the hob on and I could not get back in.
“I was panicking, I called my dad and brother who helped get the door open. My brother’s friend ended up smashing the door in.
“My concern is not just for us, but the whole block. Everyone has potentially got a fire hazard like this in their house which is scary.”
Ms Deasy wants to rip the kitchen out and start again but is not able to do so as it is a council rented property.
She added: “I can’t even leave my kitchen while I’m cooking, I’m fearful it is going to happen again.”
She said her family had tried everything to push the drawer back in to unblock the door and get to the exposed flame.
Ms Deasy added she was very worried for her daughter, who was upstairs at the time, and said she was told by the council she would need to wait ten days for a repair team to solve the issue.
A Basildon Council spokesman said: “We were sorry to learn of this incident and have reviewed details of the property’s layout. All homes managed by the council have a system of compliance checks in place to ensure they are safe for our residents.
“In this instance, we have advised the resident to temporarily remove any obtruding objects and we will conduct any repairs as necessary.”
