ALMOST 300 passengers boarded the iconic Waverley paddle steamer as it made a delayed return to Southend after technical issues forced sold out cruises to be cancelled.

The world's last sea-going paddle steamer made its first visit of the year to Southend Pier yesterday where more than 260 passengers boarded for a cruise to the historic Red Sands, Shivering Sands and Knock John forts, joined by a Maunsell Forts expert who gave commentary to passengers.

The cruise had started in London where more than 500 passengers enjoyed the experience of sailing under Tower Bridge as it opened just for Waverley.

Urgent work to one of the ship's paddles saw up to thirteen trips to or from Southend cancelled at the weekend, but thanks to the efforts of engineers the Waverley was back sailing from Gravesend earlier than originally expected on Sunday evening.

Paul Semple, general manager of Waverley Excursions, said: “It was fantastic to have Waverley back on the Thames and sailing from Southend Pier. The city of Southend has shown incredible support towards Waverley since her very first visit back in 1978.

“I would also like to acknowledge the team at Southend Pier who take in the ship’s ropes and help passengers travel up and down the pier to join Waverley.

“Our sailings this year have proven exceptionally popular with over 12,000 tickets sold across the two-and-a-half-week programme when Waverley is on the Thames.“

Any passengers who were due to sail at the weekend were contacted to either transfer to other sailings or have a full refund, Paul confirmed.

“Waverley is now on the Thames and sailing regularly from Southend Pier until Sunday, October 13,“ he added.

“There are some tickets still available, but I would strongly recommend booking in advance via our website or booking office to be sure of your tickets.”

The Waverley's trips from Southend always prove popular, with five cruises already fully sold out, so those interested are urged to check waverleyexcursions.co.uk/book and book in advance.
