POLICE have provided an update on their investigation into an alleged rape in a Basildon town centre car park after an arrest was made.

A woman reported being attacked at the bottom of the slope in the Asda car park at the Eastgate shopping centre at about 4am last Sunday [September 22].

Since then, Essex Police officers from the force's major crime team carried out multiple enquiries and, last Tuesday evening, arrested a man on suspicion of rape.

Police have now confirmed this man has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "A man who was arrested in connection with our investigation has been released on bail until Friday, December 13 while our enquiries continue."

Following the arrest, police issued an appeal for anyone with any information, CCTV or dash came footage to come forward. The force also confirmed officers were aware of posts on social media reporting an incident earlier in the night where two women claimed they were followed.

Police are working to establish the details of that incident and the circumstances around it.
