A NEW Greek street-food business is preparing to open its doors in Westcliff’s iconic Arches after plans were given the green light.

Proposals to build an “enclosed seating area” on the front of an empty restaurant have been approved by Southend Council and the new business is now preparing to begin work ahead of opening the new restaurant and takeaway.

The site has been empty for more than a year after previously being occupied by Arches Fish Bar, and before that as the Garden Cafe.

Plans submitted by Georgios Malekos have revealed the business will be called “Greek Grub” and offer both eat in and takeaway food in the prime location on the seafront in Palmeira Parade.

Matt Dent, Southend Labour councillor responsible for culture, tourism, and business, welcomed the positive news.

He said: “I think that sounds good. This is a very popular area for dining, and I think putting something a bit different is likely to be very successful “It broadens the offering and the appeal on the Arches. I wish them good fortune when opening.”

The designs show plans for a proposed blue outdoor dining area in front of the current unit, which will be used as the kitchen and preparation area.

Glass panels will surround the outdoor dining area so customers can take in the views of the seafront.

The business could join a long list of successful and long-standing businesses at the Arches in Westcliff.

Mr Dent added: “It is still obviously not the time for businesses but the fact we are still seeing so many people open up businesses in Southend is a positive thing.

“We aspire to make Southend the best place it can be for doing business.

“It is certainly a vote in favour that we are still continuing to see new businesses.”

According to Google, the business has already begun adding its menu to Deliveroo with items such as Gyros Wraps, Gyros Box and Souvlaki Wraps.

The opening hours proposed after from 7am until 9pm from Monday to Friday, 7am until 10pm on Saturday’s and 7am to 9pm on Sunday’s.
