DAILY inspections are being carried out at a Canvey park after reports of rat poison being scattered in the area and one dog becoming seriously unwell.
Castle Point Council has urged residents – particularly dog walkers – to remain vigilant around Kismet Park, Canvey, after receiving numerous reports of rat poison.
According to reports on social media, one dog has already required urgent treatment at a vets after consuming the poison and the incident has been reported to Essex Police.
In response, Castle Point Council has committed to conducting thorough inspections of the park over the coming days.
A spokesperson for the council assured residents that “the safety of the community is of the highest priority” and emphasised that measures are being taken to address the situation swiftly.
Dave Blackwell, leader of Castle Point Council, said: “I am very concerned to be honest.
“Anyone who has issues with rats should contact the council as we have safe and proper ways of dealing with the issue.
“Anyone that puts rat poison down is putting pets and wildlife at risk.
“I have heard a few people say they believe someone has been doing it on purpose, and I really wouldn’t like to think that.
“But I have never had any complaints about rats in the area.
“So, I condemn anyone that just puts rat poison down in a public place like this.
“It is awful, it could kill a pet or wildlife.”
The council has also encouraged anyone who spots suspicious activity or any further instances of poison to report them immediately.
Pet owners are advised to keep a close watch on their animals while using the park.
“I urge anyone that sees anybody doing this to contact the council, or even report it to the police, as it is incredibly concerning,” Mr Blackwell added.
“Unfortunately, there are some very strange people in the world, and we need to clamp down on this, and we will if we find out someone is doing it on purpose.
“For now, the council will do daily inspections as it is very worrying.”
