A NUMBER of shoplifters have been sentenced at magistrates' courts in recent weeks for targeting stores across south Essex.


A PROLIFIC shoplifter has been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds in compensation after targeting Basildon shops.

Carleigh Day, of no fixed address, stole food items from the BP garage in East Mayne on June 12 and July 5, as well as Morrisons on June 24, worth a total of £234.90.

The 44-year-old also took dental products worth £100 from Boots in the town on August 14. She admitted the offence at Southend Magistrates’ Court on September 4, where she was ordered to pay £334.90 in compensation.

A SHOPLIFTER who stole hundreds of pounds worth of items has been banned from two town centre shops.

Sam Sharp, 37, targeted HMV in Basildon’s Eastgate, taking £400 worth of various items on March 10 before taking a DVD boxset worth £129.99 the following day. He also stole perfume from Boots on March 10 and two sets of glasses from Specsavers on April 21.

He admitted four counts of shop theft and was banned from HMV, Boots and Specsavers in Basildon for a year. Sharp, of Ludovick Walk in Putney, London, must pay £250 compensation.


A SHOPLIFTER who targeted a supermarket in Southend has avoided a fine.

Simon Price stole cheese products worth £107 from the Iceland in Southend city centre on September 6, Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court heard.

Price, of Dapple Close, Rochford, admitted the offence the next day and was handed a six-month conditional discharge. This means if he commits another offence during this time, he can be sentenced for this offence and the new one.

No order for costs was made due to a lack of means.


A THEIF who targeted a Southend supermarket across a week has been ordered to pay compensation.

Andrew Szawatkowski, 47, stole five bottles of wine worth £45 from Tesco Express on October 11 last year before targeting the store again taking £62 worth bottles of wine on October 16 and £47.50 worth of larger, crisps and wine on October 17.

Szawatkowski, of York Road, admitted the offence and was ordered to pay compensation of £154.50 at Southend Magistrates' Court on Monday, September 9.

No order for costs was made.

A shoplifter who stole items worth a total of more than £450 from two Southend stores has been ordered to take part in drug rehabilitation.

James Pusey, of Springfield Drive, Westcliff, stole a total of £226 worth of alcohol from Sainsbury's on July 8 and 9, and frozen prawns worth almost £296 from Farmfoods on July 23 and August 28, Southend Magistrates' Court heard.

He admitted the offence and was ordered to take part in three months of drug rehabilitation and pay £100 in compensation on Wednesday, September 11.

No order for costs was made due to limited means


A THIEF who stole more than £300 worth of food from Marks and Spencer has been fined.

James Green, of Beresford Road, Southend, stolen meat worth £310 from the High Street store on September 11.

The 43-year-old admitted one count of shop theft and was fined £120 at Southend Magistrates' Court on Friday, September 13.

He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85.


A MAN who stole beauty products from a store and attacked a woman on the same day has been ordered to pay compensation.

Liam Gaffney, of York Road, Southend, stole Ted Baker health and beauty items worth £300 from the Boots in Grays and assaulted the store manager on April 12, Southend Magistrates' Court heard.

The 31-year-old admitted both offences and was ordered to pay £150 in compensation on Wednesday, September 11.

He must also take part in 25 days of rehabilitation activity, the court ordered.


A WOMAN who stole hundreds of pounds worth of makeup from a major retailer at Lakeside must now carry out unpaid work.

Adelina Ciuciu, 27, stole £631 worth of makeup from the former House of Fraser store at the West Thurrock shopping centre on January 30 last year.

She admitted the offence earlier this year and was ordered to take part in 60 hours of unpaid work at Southend Magistrates' Court on September 10.

Ciuciu, of Cedar Avenue, Enfield, in London was also ordered to pay a £114 surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.


A SHOPLIFTER has been banned from three stores in Basildon town centre after a string of thefts.

Joel Lazarus, of Seaforth Road, Westcliff, stole Nike clothes from Sports Direct on March 5, baby bottles from Boots on March 9, and whiskey and "snacks" from Asda on June 10, Southend Magistrates' Court heard.

The 37-year-old admitted the offences earlier this year and was banned from all three stores for three years at Southend Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, September 11.

He also admitted two counts of common assault, committed on June 10, and was ordered to take part in six months of drug rehabilitation.
