A PIER train has been damaged with one of its windows shattered after it struck the buffers at the weekend.
Rail services were stopped and passengers getting off the Waverley at the end of Southend Pier say they had to walk back or wait for the back-up diesel train to arrive after the new electric train hit the buffers on Sunday afternoon.
Southend Council, which owns the pier, is looking into the incident and services will continue to operate as normal, the Echo understands.
Photos from pier visitors show the extent of the damage to the front of the train, with one of its windows smashed as a passenger says it "blew out" when the train crashed at around 4pm.
Southend Council has been contacted for further comment.
