A NEW health centre which will “make a real difference for those waiting for treatment” has been given the green light ahead of initial works starting.

Both Basildon Council and Essex County Council have now approved detailed plans for new Community Diagnostic Centre in Pitsea.

The facility, at the former site of The Place, will provide much-needed diagnostic facilities including scanning and imaging services, helping to cut down wait times across south Essex.

With the plans now officially approved, preparation works are due to start within two weeks, ahead of demolition starting in the new year.

The Mid and South Essex NHS Trust are expecting work to be completed and the centre to be up and running by the end of 2026 following a “complex build”.

Jack Ferguson, councillor responsible for culture, sport and community, said: “The new Community Diagnostic Centre will bring much-needed services to local people and it will be a fantastic addition to Pitsea town centre.

“The centre will reduce wait times for diagnostic testing, which will reduce uncertainty for those who are unwell.

“I am pleased we have now reached this formal stage. Development of the site can now begin in earnest and I look forward to sharing more information as we progress.”

The facility will also house a redesigned Pitsea Library and community spaces under the management of Basildon Council.

The current Pitsea Library will temporary close from October 17, in preparation for demolition.

Services are being provided at the neighbouring Vange Library in the meantime.

Matthew Hopkins, chief executive of Mid and South Essex NHS Trust, added: “The approval of the Pitsea Community Diagnostic Centre is a major step forward in allowing us to deliver faster and more convenient healthcare services in the local community.

“We are looking forward to partnering with Basildon Council and Essex County Council to bring the largest Community Diagnostic Centre in south Essex to Pitsea, making sure the centre meets the needs of local people now and in the future.”
