Just a stone’s throw from the Leigh shoreline, Two Tree Island is where you’ll find a quiet and picturesque nature walk. This tidal island is a magnet for migrating birds and is often filled with birdwatchers seeking rare sightings. 

The paths and trails wind through salt marshes and mudflats and you’ll be treated to estuary views for the duration of your stroll. As the tide shifts throughout the day, the landscape will morph before your eyes and offer ample opportunity for photography. This really is one of south Essex’s most dynamic coastal walks.

Shoebury East Beach

Offering a peaceful retreat from the more crowded areas of Southend, Shoebury East Beach is a winter walker's dream. In the colder months it is transformed into a serene and spectacular stretch of coastline that is perfect from a refreshing stroll. 

A large sand beach promises gorgeous views across the Thames Estuary and on clearer days you can look out all the way to the Kent coastline. If you’re craving more at the end of your walk, be sure to visit nearby Gunners Park. With its historical landmarks and nature trails it’s the perfect extension to your seaside excursion.

Leigh to Chalkwell

One of the region's most popular seaside walks, the Leigh to Chalkwell route is all the more magical in winter. You’ll set off from the quaint fishing village of Leigh, and pass cockle sheds, moored boats and plenty of charming independent shops. 

You’ll enjoy panoramic views across the Thames Estuary as you make your way to Chalkwell. The stretching promenade makes this an accessible and easy walk for all. In the colder months, the crowds are thinner on this ever-popular slice of Essex coastline and you'll be able to truly take in the majestic coastal views.

Bored of bustling promenades and walking trails? For an off-the-beaten-path winter stroll, make sure to head to Thorney Bay Beach on Canvey. This excellent coastal gem is quiet in the winter and with wide, expansive landscapes offers a refreshing seaside experience. 

The nearby marshlands and their interesting sea defences create a stunningly unique landscape complete with views across the Thames. This coastal path will lead you through nature reserves packed with wildlife. The tranquillity, peace and raw beauty of this walk offer a unique and captivating escape during the winter months.
