HUNDREDS of new homes could be built on open space next to Basildon golf course after a developer launched a consultation into plans to create a “vibrant new community”.
Developer EA Strategic Land has sent leaflets to residents living around London Road, Vange, revealing proposals to build “up to 300 new homes”.
The site was previously allocated for hundreds of properties in the Basildon Council draft local plan, before it was withdrawn, and had also been earmarked for dozens of traveller pitches.
Last year, the same developer also drew up plans for 650 homes which have since been cut back.
Kerry Smith, independent councillor responsible for the Nethermayne ward, said: “This is the site that we had to fight against having traveller pitches on.
“My assumption is that the developer is jumping the gun now, ahead of the local plan, so the county council don’t impose traveller sites in the development.
“If that is the case, then I will bite the bullet with these plans. As if they get planning permission before the local plan is passed, they can’t be forced to add the traveller pitches.
“Of course, I understand the concerns and infrastructure concerns residents have, but once you get traveller pitches, it doesn’t do a lot for the area.”
Proposed plans would include a mix of one, two, three, and four-bedroom homes, with 50 per cent of them being affordable.
Within the plans, the developer is proposing 24 acres of green infrastructure as well as a new vehicular access point from London Road.
In the leaflet, EA Strategic Land stated: “We would like to build a neighbourhood of up to 300 attractive, environmentally friendly homes.
“The proposed development would help support Basildon Council in meeting local housing needs.
“We understand the need for housing for people in the Basildon area and hope that this development would assist in providing much-needed homes, including for those working at the nearby Basildon Hospital.
“We also anticipate this development would help to provide significant economic benefits through investment in the area.”
