A woman has been cut from her car following a "serious" crash in a Leigh road just off the A127. 

The crash, which happened around 10.44am this morning, saw a woman cut from her car and rushed to hospital - with it believed a car crashed into her at speed as she pulled into her drive. 

The woman was rushed to Southend Hospital by ambulance after she was rescued by firefighters. 

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Oakwood Avenue, Leigh at 10:44am.

“On arrival, crews reported two vehicles had collided and a woman was trapped in her vehicle. Crews worked to rescue the woman and she was left in the care of the ambulance service."

Police were also called to the scene alongside paramedics, with the road closed off for a period of time.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Two ambulances and a paramedic car were sent to Oakwood Avenue, Leigh, this morning following reports of a road traffic collision.

"Two patients were assessed at the scene and one woman was transported to Southend University Hospital."
