A FLIGHT from Southend Airport to Malaga was forced to make an emergency diversion after hitting a bird after take-off.
The easyJet flight had taken off on Saturday morning when it was struck by a bird, before being diverted to London Gatwick Airport.
The left engine was damaged by the strike and the plane was met by emergency services on arrival as a precaution.
EasyJet has apologised for the inconvenience to passengers and thanked them for their patience and understanding.
An easyJet spokesman said: "easyJet can confirm that flight EJU7008 from Southend to Malaga on October 20 diverted to Gatwick due to a bird strike shortly after take-off.
"The pilot took this decision in line with our procedures and performed a routine landing.
"Emergency services attended the aircraft on arrival as a precautionary measure only.
“All passengers disembarked normally at Gatwick where a replacement aircraft and crew have been arranged to continue the journey to Malaga as quickly as possible.
“Whilst this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience experienced and thank passengers for their patience and understanding.
“The safety of passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority.”
