It’s that time of year again when young children are cast for their school’s Nativity play and while most will recall the famous tale of Mary and Joseph, this year, children are being given more opportunities to be present on stage.
One parent took to X, formerly Twitter, to share the email she received which told her the part her daughter would play in the Nativity at her school.
She captioned the email: “Nativity season is upon us! My son has been cast as a wise man. My daughter, on the otherhand –”.
The email explains that her daughter will play the part of a door. Yes, that’s right, a door.

Internet divided as child cast as a door in Christmas Nativity show
It said: “Your child has been cast as a door. This role will be interactive.”
The email added some inspiration for the outfit: “Their costumes can be purchased or created at home using things such as cardboard and string to create a sandwich board style door for them to pop over their head.”
While you try to make sense of how a door could be integrated as a starring role in the traditional Nativity story, here are some other Nativity roles that might make you smile.
One person replied to the post, questioning how a child could possibly play the part of a door: “They have to be kidding right? a door?? how interactive can a door be?”, adding a crying face emoji.

Commenting on the social media post, another parent said: “We still laugh about my now 14 year old's first nativity, when she came home with a piece of paper just saying, "Jessica R is a cow."”
Another person recalled their brother’s role in his Nativity: “My brother was the back end of a camel”.
One parent said their child had once also been cast as part of a door in a different show: “Haha. My daughter was once part of the door in "The lion the witch and the wardrobe", so I definitely sympathise with her...”
With a bit less sympathy, another person commented: “At least that’s an interactive role. I was a tree.”
