A popular fireworks display in Essex has been cancelled, organisers have confirmed.

Colchester Rugby Club has hosted its annual fireworks display ahead of Bonfire Night, at its grounds in Raven Park, Cuckoo Farm Way, on November 3.

Legal threats resulted in a more subdued display in 2023, but now, the event has been cancelled.

In a statement, the rugby club said: “It is with much regret that due to unreasonable pressure from the local equine community, the Executive Committee of Colchester RFC have taken the decision to cancel the Fireworks Event at Raven Park this year.

“Refunds for tickets already purchased will be made automatically.”

The recent announcement the rugby club would be “turning up the volume” left some campaigners disappointed.

CEO of Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Lynn Cutress, urged the club to reconsider.

Club chairman Karl O’Brien told the Gazette, that organisers have tried to be very considerate, but the club has been left disappointed by "the tone and level of threats" made against the event.
