A woman who became famous for giving birth to quadruplets will be honoured with two street names in Shoebury.

Phoebe Meacham gained worldwide attention in 1962 after giving birth to naturally-conceived quadruplets, Lucille, Yana, Christopher, and Edward, at Rochford Hospital.

The four babies weighed a collective 12lb 11oz and were believed to be the smallest surviving quadruplets at the time, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Mrs Meacham died in 2014 aged 86 but her memory will now live on through the naming of two roads at Artillery Mews: Meacham Way and Meacham Mews.

One of the quadruplets, Edward, was invited as the guest of honour to officially cut the ribbon at the development.

He said: "My siblings and I would like to express our gratitude and thanks to Taylor Wimpey and Southend Council for naming these roads after our late mother.

"She was a fantastic lady, and an amazing mother to us.

“Artillery Mews will be a wonderful family community in an area where we still have family.

"My mother was very well known in Shoebury and always loved visiting the beaches here. This will be a lasting tribute to her and her quadruplets."
