With fireworks set to light up skies across the UK, Dogs Trust Basildon has issued timely advice for pet owners to help ease their dogs' anxieties.
According to the charity's research, around 45 per cent of owners reported that their dogs aren’t always calm when fireworks are set off.
While the charity advises owners to start their firework prep weeks in advance, there are still things owners can do to help keep their dogs calm this Bonfire Night.
Dr Jenna Kiddie, head of canine behaviour at Dogs Trust, emphasizes the importance of staying calm.
Dogs Trust has shared practical strategies for keeping pets comfortable.
These include setting up a cosy night in with closed curtains, lights, and background noise like TV or music to mask the sounds of fireworks.
Dog owners are also advised to walk their pets before dark, create a safe space within the home, and check for any escape routes to prevent scared pets from running off.
For dogs previously affected by fireworks, consulting a vet may help, as prescribed medication can offer relief.
Dr Kiddie added: “One of the best things you can do is to stay calm yourself as this will help your dog to stay relaxed; close the curtains, turn on the TV or the radio and prepare for a cosy night in with your dog.
“If your dog has previously shown signs of distress, get in touch with your vet to discuss medication, which can often help them cope during this stressful time.”
