A PORSCHE showroom will open in place of an old Mercedes Benz dealership fronting on to the A127 after major plans were given the green light by Southend Council.
The prestigious German car manufacturer, known for producing the iconic 911 sports car, has been granted planning permission to build a showroom in Stephenson Road, Eastwood.
Hoardings have been spotted around the site in recent weeks ahead of the demolition of the former dealership and construction of a two-storey showroom. The centre will have a contemporary design and its appearance will be of a “prestige nature” according to the plans.
Robert McMullan, Lib Dem councillor for Eastwood Park, said ward councillors welcomed the approval.
He said: “It’s a like-for-like change from the previous use. We do welcome it. We think it’s appropriate for the industrial zone that it’s on and hopefully we will see some local jobs created as a result.
“I understand the nearest other dealerships are Colchester and London so there is a desire from those who have those kind of cars to have something a bit more local so that’s welcome.
“The plans and the size of the building we felt was appropriate. We had no concerns and we hope it will create some local employment.”
Stephen Aylen, Independent councillor for Belfairs Ward opposite the proposed showroom, also welcomed the addition of another big name brand.
He added: “It’s a good quality development, a Porsche dealer and it’s right there on a prominent corner. Instead of being boarded up empty it will bring business and jobs to the area.
“We’ve got Byfords over the road and other shops but hopefully the people looking at Porsches might come and boost other local businesses.”
Approving the scheme, planning officers said: “The proposal would be acceptable in principle and have an acceptable impact on the character of the area and on the amenities of neighbouring occupiers.
“There would be no significantly adverse parking or highways impacts, and it would be acceptable on sustainability, biodiversity, drainage and waste grounds.
“The proposal would have a public benefit of reusing previously developed land at an appropriate location for employment generating business purposes.”
