A STATUE honouring D-Day hero Don Sheppard will be unveiled in Basildon town centre, the council has revealed.

Don Sheppard, who died aged 104 in September of pneumonia, is to be honoured with the new statue commemorating his service in Normandy and at Arnhem.

Given the freedom of the borough back in 2019, Don’s focus was always on those who paid the ultimate price during the war and honouring their memory.

Basildon council leader, Gavin Callaghan, said: “Basildon New Town was born 75 years ago out of the need to provide better homes for the heroes that braved fascism and fought valiantly for our freedoms during the Second World War.

“Since then, the town and indeed the borough have continued to send their sons and daughters to fight in conflicts from the Falklands to Iraq to Afghanistan.

“Every year we come together to remember and reflect on those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

“As those generations become part of our history rather than our present, it’s vital we find new ways to remember, that’s why I’m thrilled and humbled to announce we will be building a statue of local hero Don Sheppard.”

Don was born in Laindon and moved to Basildon, serving as a despatch rider in June of 1944.

“Don’s story is of course not unique, but his service from D Day to liberating a concentration camp, is emblematic of the combat and humanitarian role our forces play across the world.

“That role continues today in our proud record of service in Basildon borough, Don’s story is part of our history but his message of peace and confronting fascism is one that must also guide our future.”

Mayor of Basildon, councillor Allan Davies, who paid his respects at the service in Basildon yesterday, said: “Today, we remember the brave men and women who selflessly served our country.

“It’s a time to reflect on their courage, resilience, and dedication, which have shaped the freedoms we enjoy today.

“As Mayor of Basildon, it is not only my duty but also my honour to mark this important day alongside our residents and veterans.”
