FREE parking on Sundays throughout December is returning to Southend in a bid to boost business through the festive season.
Southend Council has announced that all council-managed car parks will be free to park in every Sunday during the month.
The initiative aims to encourage residents and visitors to support Southend businesses over the Chris period.
Daniel Cowan, leader of Southend Council, said: “The Christmas period is vital for small businesses, and we’re encouraging people to get offline and use local shops with free festive parking on Sundays in December for both residents and visitors to Southend.
“Shopping local isn’t just for Christmas. It’s for every season.
“When you buy local, you’re helping to create jobs, grow the economy, and keep Southend thriving.”
The free parking will be available on December 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29.
It applies to council-run off-street car parks only and does not include on-street parking bays.
The council hopes the move will entice more shoppers to Southend’s variety of shops, restaurants, and services.
The initiative coincides with Small Business Saturday on December 7 – a national campaign which emphasises the importance of supporting local businesses.
The council also encourages residents to explore the It’s Local Southend directory for holiday gifts and services.
Mr Cowan added: “As we approach the festive period, I encourage everyone to explore the It’s Local Southend directory for holiday gifts and services, especially on Small Business Saturday, and to keep supporting local businesses year-round.
“Together, we can make a positive impact on our city.”
For those planning regular visits, the Southend Pass provides parking for up to 13 hours a day, including evenings, for 34p per day.
Tradespersons offering essential services like plumbing, electrical work, and decorating can apply for the Tradesperson Permit, allowing parking access in residential permit bays, council car parks, and on-street pay zones throughout the city during the working week.
Details of council car parks can be found on the council’s website at southend.gov.uk/car-parks-1.
