HEROIC staff at a GP surgery have been introduced to the beautiful baby girl they helped deliver after a mum went into labour in their car park.

Dr Alex Shaw and his team at Highlands Surgery, on London Road, Leigh, leapt into action last month to help deliver baby Olivia.

Mum, Melissa Archer, and her husband Michael, took Olivia to meet the team yesterday to introduce Olivia and issue a heartfelt thank you for their heroic actions.

The family, from Benfleet, were on their way to Southend Hospital on October 16 when Melissa’s contractions sped up and Michael quickly rushed into the GPs surgery asking for help.

Dr Shaw and his team didn’t hesitate before rushing outside and helping deliver Olivia.

Melissa said: “We had already called 999 and asked for an ambulance, but there was no time to wait for it to arrive.

“So, Michael ran into the surgery to ask for help and came back to assist me whilst the paramedics talked him through what to do.

“My husband did absolutely amazing with it being a very scary situation, he stayed calm and helped bring Olivia into the world. I couldn’t have done it without him.

“We were both so grateful when Dr Alex Shaw and his team rushed out to also help. They acted quickly and made sure both me and our baby were ok.

“It will definitely be a story to tell Olivia when she is older.

“It was great to visit the team at Highlands Surgery today and say a heartfelt thank you in person to Dr Alex Shaw and the whole team.

“We are all so in love with our new addition and enjoying life as a family of four. Our son Ethan is such a proud big brother.”

On the day, the mum-of-two had just dropped her five-year-old son, Ethan, at school before her contractions started.

Her husband Michael rushed home from work and the couple rushed the car to drive to Southend Hospital.

However, they only made it around ten minutes up the road, before realising they weren’t going to make it, so pulled over at Highlands Doctors Surgery.

Michael added: “Dr Shaw and his team brought calm to a very stressful situation for me.

“My wife was an absolute hero, the real star of the show, with no pain relief bringing our daughter into the world.

“I am incredibly proud of her.”
