Robins Pie and Mash – Basildon and Southend
Robins has been producing traditional Pie and Mash in East London and Essex for five generations, so it should come as no surprise that their mash is among the best in the county.
The pies at Robins are filled with 100% Scottish beef and covered in delicious gravy. Though remaining a traditional company, Robins also stocks vegetarian and vegan pies at all of their branches.
The shop has a Tripadvisor score of 4.5, with user Whu2017 saying: “Came in with my partner for a late lunch and we saw how big the queue was but didn’t need to worry as it was moving quickly, the service was lovely and they took care of all our needs, the food was tasty and nostalgic, and we will be returning”.
Tarpots Pie and Mash – Benfleet
No nonsense and reliably delicious, Tarpots Pie and Mash is a friendly, family run café serving Pie and Mash in its most traditional East End form. The shop was taken over by new management in 2024.
Diners at Tarpots can expect a mouthwatering meal. While the café specialises in traditional Pie and Mash, a range of other English dishes are on offer including paninis, jackets potatoes and burgers. What’s more, Tarpots even offer a delivery service.
The shop has a Tripadvisor score of 4.5, with user Lynn Slattery saying: “Just ordered double pie, mash and liquor for lunch. Had it delivered as currently convalescing. Best pie and Nash we’ve had in ages! Hot, tasty and great portion size - here in 20 mins”.
Star Cafe Pie & Mash - Rayleigh
Situated on Rayleigh High Street, Star Café Pie and Mash has emerged as the top spot for Pie and Mash fans in Rayleigh for its authentic East End offerings and fantastic customer service.
Visitors to Star Cafe also report fantastic fried breakfasts with many rating the café their best in town for across-the-board traditional English cuisine. To make life easier, takeaway meals are also available.
The shop has a Tripadvisor score of 4.5, with user Christopher S saying: “The pie and mash is very good with the traditional green gravy with a brown gravy also available on request, there is also other excellent dishes on the menu, looking around the food looked well-presented and there is clearly a local following because the place was full”.
