Today marks the annual Southend Christmas light switch-on, as Southend City BID prepares to light up the city centre and welcome the start of the holiday season.
This year’s event promises a full day of festivities, performances, and family-friendly activities ahead of the grand 6pm light switch on.
The event kicks off at noon on the main stage, hosted by BBC Essex, with a line-up designed to showcase Southend’s cultural richness and community spirit.
Performances will feature local groups such as Greenways Juniors' school choir, The Southend Irish Association Ceili Band, and The Ironworks Additional Needs performance group.
The day’s entertainment will culminate in a lively Christmas sing-along with The Melvin Beddow Big Band.
The Mayor of Southend will then join panto stars from The Cliffs Pavilion’s "Jack and The Beanstalk," as well as Southend’s beloved local hero, Salvo the Clown, to switch on the lights at 6pm.
In addition to the main stage performances, families are invited to take part in the “Bean Walk,” a unique interactive trail that guides participants through various activity stations along the High Street.
At each station, visitors will complete festive activities that bring them closer to becoming a "beanstalk" - culminating in the ultimate prize: a visit with Father Christmas at The Forum.
Adding to the festivities, musicians will be busking throughout the High Street, creating a lively holiday soundtrack.
Walkabout entertainment will feature Magic Dave, the Glitter Belles, and mischievous elves, while a storytelling bus, hosted by storyteller Hannah Brailsford, will offer captivating tales from noon to 4pm.
Children’s rides on the south side of the railway bridge and in Royals Square will be sure to keep young visitors entertained, and a bustling artisan craft market will provide a shopping experience filled with unique handmade goods from local creatives.
Southend City BID organizers are eager to see the community come together for this cherished seasonal celebration.
With entertainment, interactive activities, and a dazzling lights display, the Southend Christmas light switch-on is set to be a day filled with warmth, cheer, and community spirit.
