Zena Law, who lives a few doors away from Pure Indulgence was at home at the time of the incident and said: “I heard an incredibly large bang in the evening and initially thought it had come from inside the house, so I went looking for something that had fallen off the wall.”

She added: “I don’t have a car so am not too aware of what’s going on out there but I have seen the broken wall and all the police outside when the incident happened.”

Reflecting on the damage, several Elm Road residents expressed concern about the speed of drivers on the road.

“I’m not surprised at all, it’s an accident waiting to happen”.

The speed of drivers using Elm Road is limited by a 30mph restriction, but Lib Dem councillor for Leigh, Carole Mulroney supported resident’s concerns around speeding on the road.

“Although I’ve had no specific complaints recently, I have witnessed people put their foot down as they come round the corner,” she said.

The councillor believes that the openness and downhill nature of the road encourages drivers to put their foot down and build speed.

She added: “In terms of Friday’s incident, nobody has spoken to me about it but there’s no doubt that you do often see people driving unnecessarily fast.”

Essex Police attended the scene on Friday evening but it is believed that there were no serious injuries as a result.
