Residents have been urged to "be careful" after significant rainwater has caused flooding on a key road beneath a south Essex railway bridge.

The issue, which surfaced after heavy rainfall this morning, has caused pooling of rainwater underneath the Benfleet Railway Bridge, on Ferry Road, over to Canvey.

Dame Rebecca Harris, MP for Castle Point, has taken to social media to address the matter, thanking residents for bringing it to her attention.

She confirmed discussions with South Benfleet’s Essex County Councillor Andrew Sheldon, who visited the site to assess the situation firsthand.

Following the inspection, Ms Harris states that Essex Highways are dispatching a team to investigate, while Anglian Water is checking their telemetry data from the nearby pumping station.

In the meantime, residents have been urged to be careful when using the underpass.

Ms Harris said: “Thank you to the residents who contacted me concerned about the pooling of rainwater this morning underneath the Benfleet Railway Bridge on Ferry Road before the bridge over to Canvey.

“I have spoken to the local Essex County Councillor for South Benfleet, Andrew Sheldon, who went to take a look this morning.

“He has contacted both Essex Highways, who maintain the road drains, and Anglian Water, who maintain the pumping station that gets the water out over the bank and into the creek.

“In the meantime, please be careful when using the underpass, particularly if we get any more rain. If in doubt, please avoid it and use Canvey Way.”
