A HEAD-ON crash left a woman in hospital with serious injuries after a van and car collided on a busy road close to the A127.

Nevendon Road remained closed yesterday evening after multiple emergency services, including five police cars, two ambulances and an air ambulance were called to the scene at roughly 3.30pm.

The major route linking Basildon and Wickford was closed between the A127 and Golden Jubilee Way as Essex Police investigated the crash.

A woman, who was the driver of the car involved, was subsequently taken to Basildon Hospital for further treatment, after initially being treated at the scene. Police have now confirmed she suffered serious injuries.

Long queues formed on the A127 following the crash before the road closure was eventually reduced to a small section of the road close to the Bekash restaurant.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a car and a van in Nevendon Road, Wickford, at just after 2.30pm yesterday afternoon.

"The road was closed for a number of hours while emergency services worked at the scene.

"The driver of the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Please get in touch if you witnessed the collision or have any dashcam footage."
