ONE of Southend’s longest-running club nights is re-launching tomorrow at Storm.

Coco Cuba, the uplifting house and techno event, which hosted its first party in 1997, is coming back with a permanent residency in its home town.

The night began in the ballroom of the Palace Hotel, before moving to the Royal Hotel, in High Street, and later Zinc, in Lucy Road.

The ethos was to create a safe haven for clubbers of all ages and persuasions, and offer a place to dress and express, without feeling threatened.

It even held nights at London’s prestigious clubs Ministry of Sound, the Cross and Turnmills.

Organisers decided to wind down the night after a decade and only throw a couple of parties every year.

Now the night is back for good, with a new monthly slot on the second Saturday of each month, at Storm, in Elmer Approach, Southend.

“We were bombarded with e-mails asking us to bring the night back permanently,” says DJ Scott Cuba.

“After a couple of years we were missing the cosmopolitan crowd and crazy nights too.”

Coco Cuba is welcoming back open minded clubbers, which Scott says, was what made the events so special in the first place.

He explains: “We’ll be playing the most upfront sounds, but the door policy will always remain the same.

“We would rather let fewer people in, than the wrong people.”

Music also comes from DJs Rob Roar and Scott Hallett.

The night runs from 10pm to 4am. Entry is £7 before 11.30pm, and £8 after.
