DOZENS of gleaming wheels lined up at a classic car show to raise cash for a leading charity which supports people with dementia.

The ever Classic Car and Retro Show was held at the Lawn, in Hall Road, Rochford, attracting about 2,000 visitors.

The show was raising money for Peaceful Place, a charity that looks after people with the onset of dementia, and their families.

In baking heat, sunlight bounced off the immaculately buffed bonnets.

Everything from American muscle car the Ford Mustang to continental classics including an Hispano-Suiza was on display.

The drivers were encouraged to take their share of the limelight, and dress in clothes typical of the era in which their vehicle was made.

Southend’s Rachel Riley, the number cruncher on Channel 4 TV show Countdown, was guest of honour and handed out prizes for the three best cars at the show, as well as best period outfit.

Event organiser Tim Bussell said: “It was amazing and we have had some really nice comments from people who came along.

“Everyone wants to know if we’ll do the same again next year.”

Mr Bussell came up with the idea in memory of his father-in-law, Steve Fitzgerald, who used to go to Peaceful Place’s day centre, in Rochford, three times a week.

Mr Fitzgerald died in April, aged 77.

Mr Bussell added: “He always loved old cars and would have loved to have been here.

“We don’t know much we have raised yet, but hopefully we’ve made a lot for the charity.”
