NEW wave legends Squeeze will be belting out hit after hit when they play Chinnery’s tomorrow.

The classic band take to the stage at the Southend venue as they tour once more to accompany the release of their album, Spot the Difference, a re-recording of some of their most famous songs.

Best known for classics including Pulling Mussels (From the Shell), Cool for Cats and Up the Junction, the band, who first hit the charts in the late Seventies, will entertain fans with songs spanning three decades.

“We’ve played in Southend lots of times,” says guitarist and vocalist Chris Difford.

“It’s a really nice place to play and it’s somewhere that’s close to London, so we can get home at night, which is quite nice.”

But although Chris may be at the age where he likes a good night’s sleep after a gig, the band haven’t lost any of their stage presence.

Chris says it’s great to have such a smash hit back catalogue to choose from.

“It makes you feel very confident if you’ve got a back catalogue like ours,” he says. “You can kind of pull out lots of songs. You can stick your hand in the bag and always come out with something really, really good.

“We’re doing lots of our hits and lots of our album tracks. Our fans are really loyal and it’s like family. We’ve noticed our audiences have started getting younger as well.

“It’s quite interesting, especially in America, it’s a younger audience there these days.

“I think the internet has opened doors for us and parents must be playing our music to their kids.”

Chris adds that like many bands who are only just starting their careers, he’s embraced the opportunities for self-marketing the internet has provided. He’s even set up his own label online, Saturday Morning Music Club, and released solo material on it.

“I didn’t want to do it the normal way,” he explains. “I wanted to do something different and that’s what I did.”

The band are happy to be on the road again and Chris adds: “It’s very familiar to be going out at this time of the year. It’s cold, it’s grey – but it’s warm inside the venues and that’s the most important thing. We have a lovely time.”

Squeeze play Chinnery’s in Marine Parade at 7.30pm. Tickets are £20. Call 01702 467305 or visit www.
