EX-EASTENDERS star Joe Swash swapped acting for firefighting as he joined south Essex crews to live out his childhood dream.

Joe spent two days with firefighters at Rayleigh Weir and Orsett stations, for a TV show featuring celebrities trying out jobs they wanted to do, or used to do, before becoming famous.

The actor’s ambition was to become a firefighter and he had even applied for a job with the service when he was 17.

As part of the ITV4 series, Back on the Job, Joe finally got his chance to see if he was brave enough to be a firefighter.

While at the training centre at Orsett fire station, he carried out a simulated rescue of a child-sized doll from a smoke-filled building.

The training, which is done by real firefighters, tests how they react in the dark, how quickly they can escape with a victim, and helps prepare them for wearing breathing apparatus.

Joe, who won I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, in 2008, also spent a day at Rayleigh Weir fire station, where he trained with crews.

He also made tea for everyone.

Assistant Divisional Officer Doug Sylvester, Rayleigh Weir station commander, said: “He joined in with everything and was really enthusiastic. Joe did very well in the breathing apparatus chamber. It is difficult and stressful, but he coped excellently.

“The crews at Rayleigh Weir really enjoyed their day with Joe. He was a good laugh to have around and mixed in really well with everyone.

“We are all looking forward to seeing the programme and hope everyone tunes in to get a look at what life is like here.”

Joe used to date south Essex actress Kara Tointon, who is appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, and he was recently seen on screen as team captain on BBC One’s Hole in the Wall.
