D Corroyer wrote about the loss of trees from our local roads (May 19), something I have noticed.
We should not, however, be too critical, since in true Southend Council fashion it has been replanting on many a street corner and along roads recently.
Bridgwater Drive, Westcliff, is a classic example.
Easy to spot, they are light brown with no branches or leaves and come from the “post family,” common name “bollards,” and what a load of them there are.
The advantages in cost saving in not having to prune or sweep up the leaves must be incalculable, making a significant contribution towards the budget cuts we are constantly being bombarded about.
It may be, of course, they are “recycling” the lovely trees that used to adorn Victoria Avenue and Victoria Circus, sic Gateway, but I have my doubts. Just the usual load of more “bollards” from the council!
