I believe Jim Worsdale’s article (My View, June 10) on Dr Aloke Basu was ill conceived.

Stripped of its highly emotive padding, it appeared to advocate a person’s profession or social standing should be a mitigating factor in sentencing when found guilty of a crime.

This would create an elite group of untouchables.

Mr Worsdale claims the doctor was foolish beyond belief.

I suggest the doctor must have been aware to drive with his optical impairment would be endangering the lives of others.

This was no accident which happened by chance, but was a premeditated decision to act in complete disregard of the law and endanger the lives of innocent people.

...Dr Basu knew that his vision had become impaired, but chose to carry on driving.

In fact, he advised the DVLA the day after the accident.

Had the accident not occurred, he would still be driving today.

As a professional person he should have known better and compassion reserved for the family of the lady he killed.

Why should leniency be shown for such a serious offence?
