YOUNG directors will make their debut in Southend next week with a series of plays staged by students on a theatre directing course.
The trio, who have been studying for two years at the Loughton campus of the town’s theatre school East 15, will showcase their work at Clifftown Studios utilising its top-class facilities.
Course leader Tony Clark says: “Normally they would hire small theatre spaces in London, but the opportunities presented by the beautiful theatre are too good to not allow them to have a go in there.”
The atmospheric studio theatre at Clifftown Studios – a renovated church – will see Fana Cioban, Justin Lucero and Jenn Banda stage their versions of Woyzeck, Spring’s Awakening and Eurydice respectively between June 29 and July 2.
Tony says: “Woyzeck’s is an unfinished play about a young man who goes to war and comes back and finds the life he left behind has completely changed.
“Spring Awakening, recently adapted as a successful musical, is the story of young adolescents in the 19th century on the cusp of becoming adults. It’s funny and sad.
“Finally, Eurydice is a contemporary play based on the Eurydice myth – it’s a love story really..”
