Those in charge of the Olympic event in Hadleigh were relieved to find anything that could be classed as an Olympic legacy to offset the profligate cost of staging two days of mountain biking in 2012.
Therefore the redundant fire station was seized upon with relish.
The chief executive of the Association for Cultural Advancement is correct in stating the fire station is a landmark, but that does not make it satisfactory as an arts centre, or any other centre for public use.
Unfortunately, the building is a landmark for the wrong reasons.
It has nothing to commend it visually, and its location on a traffic island on a busy main road may have been suitable when it was a fire station, but totally unsuitable for any regular comings and goings as an arts centre.
It seems to be the height of irresponsibility to encourage such a use that is likely to further disrupt traffic on a busy main road.
One can also envisage the problems for visitors as they dash across from the free parking at Morrison’s for a bit of culture to add to their week’s shopping.
