CONCERNED families are urging council chiefs to make a busy road safer.
The Louis Drive Estate Residents’ Association has asked Essex County Council to put a zebra crossing in Little Wheatley Chase in Rayleigh.
Barbara Oliver, secretary of the association, says there are a lot of people crossing the road to get to the Grange Community Centre and Our Lady of Ransom Primary School.
She said: “Traffic has become increasingly fast. It zooms around the corner from Bardfield Way. There are a lot more mums and little ones going across the road, the school seems to be busier.
“We have asked for a zebra crossing, but we were told there wasn’t enough foot traffic across the road.”
Beryl Dawson, another member of the residents’ association, works at the community centre and supports the calls for a crossing.
She said: “We have got Tumble Tots, mother and children groups. It seems to have got busier. This road is a real nightmare.”
Mums dropping their children off at Our Lady of Ransom School next to the community centre agreed something needed to be done to slow traffic down and make the road safer.
Jo Crowhurst, 34, of Bardfield Way, Rayleigh, said: “It’s busy and it’s probably only the cars parked on the double yellow lines that stop the traffic from going faster. I would like to see a crossing.”
Tracey Chapman, councillor responsible for highways and transportation, said: “The site has been formally assessed and it does not meet the required criteria for a crossing. The council takes road safety very seriously and we strive to ensure our resources are used in the most appropriate places according to the level of need.”
