I’m sure people remember Anne the elephant.
Anne was an elderly, arthritic elephant travelling with Bobby Roberts’ Circus, which visits Rochford each year.
Footage was released showing Anne being beaten by her groom.
Over a three-week period, the undercover footage showed Anne being beaten 48 times. The public was outraged and called for Anne to be retired from her life in the circus.
She was soon rehomed to live out her days away from circus life.
The Crown Prosecution Service is prosecuting circus owners with causing unnecessary suffering to this animal and failing to meet her needs.
They have taken on this case because of the high level of public concern for Anne, so thank you to everyone who made their voice heard on this issue.
This just goes to show how important people power is!
