Arena Essex promoter Ronnie Russell is seeking to end the campaign with a flourish as he challenges his riders to produce a couple of wins that would give them a chance of staving off the wooden spoon.
The Hammers finished bottom of the pile in 2005 and look odds on to repeat that ignominious achievement in 2006 unless they can turn in a couple of positive points winning performances against Oxford this week.
"Carrying the wooden spoon throughout the winter months is a depressing experience and one that I want us to avoid," Russell said.
Arena Essex travel to Cowley on Wednesday to face Oxford before staging the return at Purfleet on Friday.
The Hammers had their scheduled meeting at Purfleet with Eastbourne postponed on Friday after heavy rain lashed the track.
A re-arranged date has been set for Wednesday, October 4, which will bring down the curtain on what has proved a dismal season for the Hammers.
