I was interested to read (Nov 18) of proposals for the redevelopment of Pitsea town centre, including building a Morrisons store.

I thought Morrisons was going to rejuvenate Laindon Centre? Will there be a store in both areas?

How kind of these property developers to allow Pitsea Leisure Centre to remain (merely taking out the swimming pool).

This falls in well with Basildon Council’s wish to rid surrounding areas of any type of fitness facility.

The plans ensure Pitsea market will remain, but be smaller with 50 spaces, whereas now there are 150 stalls, with about 100 occupied.

What about the owners of these stalls and the people who shop in the market?

Have they been asked for their opinions? What about the people who shop in Aldi?

It looks like money and clout are once again pushing the small people out.

The developer wants to buy the site of the Railway pub and demolish it – yet another part of pre- Basildon New Town to go.

Why can’t something quirky and old have its place in today’s town centre plans?

While Pitsea definitely needs a facelift and better facilities, I hope the people there will keep an eye on these developments.

The towns in this country are already under serious danger of looking alike, selling the same things and losing any character they once had.
