I have read opinions for and against the plans for a hospice on green belt land in Leigh, and it strikes me the arguments in favour come out as very plausible when you listen with an open mind.
It is easy to knock a good and well thought out plan, but I do not hear any real reasons being put forward as to why the site should not be used.
Objector Pat Wortley says she is concerned for the wildlife on the site, but Havens has already said it is mindful of improving the site for wildlife with the planting of wild flower meadows and additional trees.
Walkers are concerned about the footpath, which Havens accepts is part of its plans.
Havens needs to find a new site and, with the lack of suitable sites in Southend, I support this application and have asked my councillors to do the same.
On balance, it is undoubtedly better the hospice is built on this land and looked after for the people of Southend, who will gain from this, whether they need to use the hospice or are able to continue to enjoy walking and taking the dog for a ramble in a cleaned-up area.
My vote, like many others, is for the hospice.
