Jeremy Clarkson says people who commit suicide by throwing themselves under a train are selfish as it delays the journey for the passengers.
He makes a living with tongue-in-cheek, bad-taste comments, and he is not meant to be taken seriously.
He could, however, use his public profile more compassionately to help promote a change in the law to provide for assisted suicide for the 6,000 desperate souls who choose this way out each year, including the average 200 “selfish” train deaths.
At a reported £10,000 fee for a “weekend in Switzerland” as the only present alternative, it seems, even in death, the rich get a better deal than the average person, and it is high time the Government looked at this problem from an objective, secular, viewpoint.
We must respect those opposing the idea because of religious beliefs, but their resistance to a change in the law is partly responsible for the awful methods being chosen by so many.
Each individual should be given the right to a lawful, properly-supervised, humane exit from life.
