POLICE have released the image of a man who they believe carried out two attempted armed robberies in Southend.

The first incident took place at the Chartwell Gallery on Southchurch Road, Southend, at 5pm on Friday.

He attempted to steal a picture frame and demanded cash but ran out of the gallery empty-handed after being contronted by a member of staff.

The staff member reported seeing what they believed to be a handgun in the waistband of his trousers.

Later that evening the same man is believed to have entered the William Hill betting shop on West Street, Southend, and demanded money from the cashier whilst armed with a gun.

The cashier ran out to the back of the shop and the man left empty-handed again.

He is described as white, in his 30s or 40s and of slim to medium build.

The armed robber had a shaven or balding head and was wearing a navy blue zipped-up anorak, dark jumper, black trousers and black trainers at the time of the incidents.

Dc Layla Barker, who is investigating the attempted robberies, said: "The picture of the man is very clear and I hope someone will recognise him and give us a name. Fortunately no one was injured in these two incidents but we need to identify the man as soon as possible."

Anyone who recognises the man should contact the Serious Crime team in Southend on 101 or call police immediately if they see him.
