PRINCESS Anne will attend a service at Chelmsford Cathedral to mark the 60th anniversary of floods which killed 95 people in Essex.

The Princess Royal will take part in the event to mark the residents of Canvey Island and Jaywick who died as a result of the North Sea flooding on 31 January 1953.

The Reverend Canon Simon Pothen said it was important to mark the event before it "fades into obscurity".

"It probably represents the final time that people will be in living memory of it," he said.

Mr Pothen said the service on 31 January would be invitation only but said he hoped it would be relayed for "people outside who wish to join in".
