A COMMUNITY group wants to turn an empty space into a charity shop to raise funds.

St Luke’s Community Association wants to open the shop at the Cluny flats, on Cluny Square.

It is hoped funds raised through shop sales will go towards helping the association put on community events, take pensioners on days out and help vulnerable residents from across St Luke’s ward.

The plan is the brainchild of independent councillor Paul van Looy, and has the backing of the Ferndale Baptist Church and the Rev Stephen Dray.

Rose Ariss, manager of the Cafe @ The Square, in Cluny Square, said: “We want to use it to benefit all the residents across the ward and for years we’ve wanted to open up that space.

“The council is happy in principle, but we need to show some architects’ drawings about what we want it to look like and we’re looking for someone who can help out.

“We also need building materials, people who can help us out with labour and donations.

It is also hoped people from the community will be able to take up voluntary roles within the shop, so they can assist the project and learn themselves new skills.

Mr van Looy said: “We’re hoping to be able to get this done to help as many people as we can.”

Anyone who can offer their skills, help with materials or has anything more to add to the project, can get in touch with the association by e-mailing cllrvanlooy@southend.gov.uk.
