SUNSEEKERS heading to summer hotspots and new routes across Britain and Europe have boosted Southend Airport passenger numbers by a third.
Almost 112,000 people used the airport in July – the highest figure in the airport’s history and up 32 per cent on July last year.
The big three which have driven up figures are Barcelona – up 38 per cent year-on-year – and Alicante, in Spain, and Palma, Mallorca, both up up 35 per cent.
The upbeat news has been tempered by easyJet’s announcement that it will axe its flights to Belfast after passenger numbers virtually halved.
However, Southend Airport operations director David Lister said: “Last month was the busiest month on record.
“We are obviously delighted that the airport is continuing to go from strength to strength."
