A PENSIONERS’ club is celebrating after being awarded £500 to repair their community hall.
The Number 2 OAP Club was awarded the grant from Canvey Town Council to help them carry out vital repairs to their hall in Central Avenue.
The hall is over 50 years old and the money will go towards carrying out restoration work to the roof as well as interior and exterior decoration.
Richard Hawkes, treasurer of the club, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this money. The hall has been around for as long as we have so it really does need a bit of care, especially with so many people using it every week.
“The roof needs repair because there is a water leak and we want to decorate inside and out. We are really grateful to the council for this grant.”
Doreen Anderson, the town council chairman, said: “Congratulations to No 2 Club on their successful application for grant funding. The No 2 Club is a vital resource for older people in the Canvey Island community and a worthy recipient of our grants scheme – we are pleased to be able to support them.”
Every year the town council sets aside money within the budget for grants, aimed to benefit people and projects on Canvey.
All community organisations on the island which work for the benefit of Canvey residents can apply for a grant.
