A CONGREGATION is hoping to restore a medieval stained glass window back to its former glory to take pride of place in their church.

The colourful window is thought to date as far back as the 12th century and was removed from St Peter’s Church, in Church Road, Thundersley, in the Sixties when the building was extended.

For about 50 years, the old window has remained hidden away for safe keeping.

Now parishioners are hoping to dig out the glass and have it restored so it can be returned to the church.

The Rev Marian Sturrock said: “We have been batting this idea around off and on ever since I’ve been here, and that’s ten years now, but it’s never got off the ground.

“But this young chap, who comes to the church and is really into history, is taking the lead and trying to make it happen.

“It’s such a shame it has been hidden away for so long, especially when it’s so old. It would be lovely to restore it.”

The stained glass window is thought to depict Christ’s crucifixion.

Parishioners hope to consult with glass experts to see how much the old east window restoration project will cost and whether it is something the parish can afford.

Ms Sturrock said: “We have not had a chance to pull out the window and see what condition it is in yet, but we do need to find out howmuch it will cost.

“We think it will be a lot, and if it is, we might have to set up a collection fund to look at grants to make it happen.

“You never know, we might find someone who loves the window so much they will help sponsor us.”
