A STRING of illegal waste operations were uncovered during a raid on a south Essex industrial estate.
Nine Environment Agency investigators accompanied by police swooped on various yards at Lychgate Farm estate off the London-bound carriageway of the A127 between Southend and Rayleigh.
Officers found unauthorised scrap yards and vehicle breakers businesses and the illegal storage of tyres and waste electrical equipment.
Evidence gathered could lead to possible prosecutions.
Berwyn Williams, an Environmental Crime Officer for the Environment Agency, said: “The operation went well and intelligence was gathered during the day that could lead to future prosecutions.
“We also gave out advice and guidance for a range of issues, including the safe storage and disposal of oils, tyres and windows.
“Serious waste crime is big business. Illegal waste sites can cause serious pollution incidents, odour problems, chemical spills, blight the landscape, and cause misery for surrounding communities.”
