LEIGH is to trial a new community concept of neighbours helping neighbours which has been a success in America.

Southend Soup is a new scheme to help neighbours bring fresh ideas to their community..

Sherry Fuller, 40, has set up the trial after being inspired by a programme on BBC Radio 4 about Detroit Soup.

In Detroit, which is experiencing severe economic crisis, people come together in their hundreds to share soup and to help fund community initiatives.

In Leigh the idea is that people pay £3 for soup, a roll, a drink and a vote.

During the evening, a few people with ideas talk about their projects before people vote for their favourite. The winning idea receives the money in the pot.

Sherry, from Westcliff, said: “People of any age, including children can come up with any idea they wish.

“It could be an artistic venture, a business idea or anything that helps the community. It can be of individual, group, or community benefit.”

Projects that have been funded through the Detroit programme include teaching young people cookery skills, teaching crafts to vulnerable adults, graveyard gardening, and start-up business ideas.

Sherry, who runs Southend Philosophy Group added: “This isn’t just about funding projects.

"It’s also about making connections.

"I hope this will bring communities together.”

The first meeting takes place at Wesley Methodist Church, Elm Road, Leigh, on Saturday September 28 from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. To put forward an idea visit southendsoup.wordpress.com/submit-a-good-idea
