CAMPAIGNERS hope auctioning the football shirt of the world’s most expensive player will help raise a lot of cash for charity.

Robert Onasse is auctioning a Gareth Bale shirt to raise cash for the Ronald McDonald House Charity, which supported the family of his godson, Harry Ingram, before he died.

Harry was the captain of the Canvey Island under-nines football team. He died in 2011 from a heart condition, aged eight.

Mr Onasse has put the shirt on Ebay inabid to raise the cash. It is Bale’s Tottenham Hotspur shirt and not that of his new club Real Madrid, who he joined for £86million last month to become the world’s most expensive footballer.

Mr Onasse said: “I bought this shirtacouple of months ago and could not believe it when Gareth Bale hit the headlines as the most expensive football player.

“Although he was not a Tottenham supporter, Harry wasakeen football player and supporter, soIhave decided to auction this shirt on Ebay in his memory.”

So far, the shirt has bids for £76, but it will be on the website until Sunday–when it will be sold to the highest bidder.

Mr Onasse said: “I have had the Spurs team’s signatures authenticated, so I am disappointed the shirt has not raised more.

“I wanted to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charity because they really supported Harry’s parents while he was ill in hospital, by giving them a place to stay.

“I know it is very cheeky, but I would like to raise the same amount as one week of a top footballer’s wages, which is about £250,000 to £300,000.”

Gareth Bale completed his first day’s training at the Bernabeu earlier this week, where he was welcomed by team mate Christiano Ronaldo.
